1/21/2024 0 Comments Game of thrones oath of loyalty![]() The Starks took Manderly gold in exchange for land and fealty this wasn't simple charity by the white hat wearing goody too shoes Starks. We, with the more cynical eye the course of this song has trained to have, can pick apart and read between the lines and guess at the less idealistic way things probably "really" happened. The Promise is an interesting bit of history/myth in Westeros. Wyman Manderly is the BIGGEST Stark Loyalist of them all. Long live King Hot Pie, first of his name. Don't get me wrong, I believe Wyman is the good guy here but self interest is as much the motivation as honor. And Rickon will approve and agree to finsnce whatever improvements to White Harbor Wyman wants. Rickon will approve whatever concessions Wyman thinks he can extract from his fellow Northmen. White Harbor men will rebuild it and House Stark will be indebted to House Manderly for the service. Winterfell is a husk that needs to be rebuilt. Or he may double cross Stannis (or be content to watch Stannis die) and crown Rickon as King in the North. He will decide whether to recognize Stannis or Tommen or Aegon or Daenerys or Hot Pie. He will betroth Rickon to his youngest granddaughter or wait for another, younger daughter of House Manderly to be born. He will take Rickon as his ward and claim guardianship. ![]() But how's it all going to shake out? Wyman intends to retrieve Rickon and install him as Lord of Winterfell. Yes, he looks like a good guy, and I'm cheering for him too. Wyman is advancing the position of his house. ![]() This may play a role into the deep loyalty they have for them and another reason why Wyman is playing such an active role with securing Rickons safety. I was listening to a podcast, forget which, where they mentioned that unlike other houses that swore oaths to the Starks, I think back when they were kings, that had to renew fealty with the new heirs of vassals coming to Winterfell to pledge loyalty upon succession, but the Manderlys made an oath to serve House Stark for all time.Īnyone have info or confirmation of that? It's more likely that there isn't much difference between the two people are good and shitty from beyond the wall to the summer islands. The Greatjon, the mountain clans, the glovers and the mormonts are all loyal northerners. While, the most honourable and decent person that lead the North in many years - Ned - received a profound cultural and educational influence (the importance of honour to a person) from his southerner mentor, Jon Arryn, and the Starks only receive true friendship, loyalty and protection from their southerners family, friends and lords - Manderly, Tully, Baratheon and the houses of the Vale (all pure andals) that wanted to help them, while several of the northerners (mainly Dustin and Bolton) were itching to betray the Starks, only waiting for an oportunity to do that. : treason, cruelty, gratuitious violence, etc. The "Northern way of doing things" is also the Bolton way, and the Karstark way, and the Umber way, and the Dustin way, etc. the Manderlys are, culturally, southerners and only northerners geographycally. ![]() ![]() You mean: "It would be EPIC, a testament to the Southern way of doing things as opposed to the Northern"? It would be EPIC, a testament to the Northern way of doing things as opposed to the Southern. ![]()
